my top business secrets

This week I was applying to be on the cover of Dermascope’s December 2024 edition and was instructed to answer some really thoughtful questions. The question that stood out to me most, and also took me the longest to answer was “What is your business’ best kept secret?” At first I wrote that I didn’t have secrets, implying that I am an open book when it comes to my business, but then I took a couple minutes and realized I have many secrets to business.

Business Secret #1: HAVE A PASSION FOR WHAT YOU DO.

You cannot run a successful business without a passion. If you are running a business without being able to pinpoint your passion, I have some bad news for you… your business is not going to survive. Passion ignites the growth. The more passion you have, the more you will grow as a business and business owner. My passion is treating acne and bringing confidence back to my clients. I know this is my passion because it was the sole component to my decision of becoming a Licensed Esthetician. Because of my personal skin journey, I know firsthand the feeling of struggling with a skin condition. I was so tired of not getting the answer I needed from doctors, so I went to Esthetician school and learned how to clear skin and educate people on acne and the importance of skincare. Because of this, my business continues to grow, I continue to grow, and my clientele now consists of all skin conditions!

Business Secret #2: BE AUTHENTIC & BE GENUINE

This is what is going to set you apart from other business’s in your industry. I know it sounds cringe, but it is so vital to your business's platform. Being authentic and genuine is so refreshing because it seems to be so rare these days. I have found that this is the first thing that I look for when I come across a new business. There have been many instances where I have not had a positive experience due to the disingenuous interactions. At the end of the day, your client is going to choose you because of who you are and what you have to offer.

Business Secret #3: FIND A CONNECTION WITH YOUR CLIENTS

This is key to retaining your clients. Your clients don’t want to feel like a transaction! Now, there isn’t a step-by-step playbook for this, it simply comes down to your passions as a business owner, who you are as a person, and the client on your table. Learn about them, unlock some things you may have in common and see how that unfolds.

I hope I was able to spark some inspiration for you and your business with these secrets. Be your authentic, genuine self. Show your client who they are choosing to work with and support. Lastly, learn about your clients! This goes back to them not wanting to feel like a transaction. They will share their life with you if they feel comfortable and when they do, take notes.
